But the cause of the weight is not books, it’s of the books themselves. Books are being defiled by the loss of their leather covers. Leather book covers are anathema to Mr Parker, leader of the efforts to save books from oblivion. His mission is to save the physical book by making the transition from books as objects to books as web objects, taking away the physical book’s bookshelf of its own accord.
Transitioning the book is part of a movement to make book stacks permanent. By removing the vertical structure of the bookshelf, and allowing the reader to choose their own reading position, bookshelf will become a shelf for books. Rather than separating books, Mr Parker wants to bring books together.
Mr Parker’s project, known as Click to Read, relies on making a digital version of a book available to anyone who wants to read it. By making a book freely available, Mr Parker hopes to bring about a sort of IKONA effect, in which books will move out of libraries, and into the homes of the reading public. To this end, Click to Read is the first ever crowdsourced anthology of the works of the best Internet writers.
Sounds like great idea, but does it work? To find out, I went to the original digital version of The Oxford Book of English Verse, 0b46394aab
