The movie was announced in August 2012 in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine where the manga was published. The announcement came alongside the confirmation the story was being written by Hideaki Sorachi.[4] The television series used to show part of its logo until revealing the full title during March 2013.[5][6] Although it was titled "Final Chapter", Sorachi said the manga series was not ending and he believed it could refer to the film being Sunrise's last production based on the series. Having been told by Sunrise about the film's title and material, Sorachi wrote a story that could be considered the end of the series.[7] Additionally, director Yoichi Fujita commented they would make a continuation if it became a hit.[8]

Not one moment of screen time is wasted. The movie is full of wonderfully animated action sequences and equally enjoyable gags that admittedly sacrifice animation for quality of laughs. This erratic jumping between tone and animation quality may leave some viewers feeling winded, but ultimately this movie is for fans of the anime and manga. The Very Final is at its very best when focusing on its characters and their established relationships, finding its emotional core in the complicated and often antagonistic relationship between Gintoki and Shinsuke.

Rating: 6.9A continuation of Gintama, it's best not to think about this as the time travel made little sense: Gin travels back in time to kill himself in the final battle yet everyone I mean everyone somehow travel back in time to stop him from killing himself after he successfully killed himself to make the peaceful timeline where he didn't exist; and Tama somehow remembered Gintoki's existence in the timeline where he was erased enough to transport everyone back in time to save him... As well as other nonsensical moments: The virus infecting Gintoki again in the final battle yet it not affecting him because he already has the virus, these are nanobots, the gin from the past was overcome by his, introducing more of them to himself should do the same to the Gintoki of the present. Also Gintoki of the Joi war seeing gintoki of the future and it having no repercussions for the timeline. Many technical flaws can't be overlooked even if this movie is essentially great fanservice for Gintama fans.
