Yes, of course it was them. They laid me down by a brook.Well, they won't cross water, will theyYou remember your grandmother telling you that And her mother Yes, you do, of course. [End Page 212]
What wonder was it, when I finished school, that I chose, after a yearor two in the Irish campaign, to return and remain in London, ratherthan journey down to the grim old castle, built by the third LordRichmond during the reign of Stephen, and live there with my father andRichard.
I had seen him several times within the last few days, hanging aroundthe corners near my apartments, as though watching for someone. Onceon coming down my steps, I ran full into his arms as he stood on thelanding, and as I disengaged myself, he glanced keenly into my face asthough to fix it in his mind, and with a word of apology passed on. Itseemed as though he followed my footsteps, for half an hour later, onpassing a fruit stand near the Thames, I had seen him gazing intentlyat me through the lattice.
Waiting a few minutes where I was, I stepped down, and turning strodeout of the lane and back to the corner whence[Pg 11] I had come only a momentago. Congratulating myself on the fact that I had shaken this spy, Iresumed my walk. Through strange twisted streets, overhung with gabled,many-windowed houses; by dark shops, now closed for the day; and alongill-paved crooked lanes I strode, engaged with my own thoughts, asblack and gloomy as my surroundings.
The taller turned quickly at the sound of my voice, and stood lookingdown at me. He was wrapped in a great cloak, and I only saw, bent uponme, the flash of a pair of cold black eyes. \"Turn the first corner tothe right,\" he answered, with a slight foreign accent. \"That will takethee straight to it,\" and he turned again to his companion as thougheager to be rid of me.
I had small time to observe these things, however, for he pressed mewith the fury of a demon, now thrusting with the point, then cutting atme with the blade. I had on merely a light rapier, more for dress thanwork, while he was using a heavy service sword, and I began to realizethat this could not last much longer, for he would beat me down by thestrength of his arm, as with all his swordsmanship he pressed upon me.
I seemed to be wandering in a vast and limitless desert, no vegetationwas in view, and I could see nothing but the hot, burning sand. I wasthirsty, but though I searched far and wide, I could find no water tocool my burning tongue. But as I looked toward the horizon, I saw abeautiful, cool oasis; the fresh, green trees seemed to beckon me on. Istruggled through the terrible heat and sand, and finally as I reachedit, it vanished, and I awoke.
Groping my way in the dark, as best I could, I crossed over to theother side of the cabin, and began to feel with my right hand along theside of the room for the boards, with which the window had been plankedup. But I was still weak and dizzy, and after a few minutes' work, Iwas compelled to sink down on the floor to rest, and while I lay there,I heard the sound of footsteps outside the door.
\"In the first place,\" he replied, \"thou art on the brig, 'Betsy,'two days out from London. In the second place, as doubtless thourememberest, thou didst attack me on the street of London, without anyjust cause, and wouldst have slain me, hadst thou had thy way. On mymen coming up, thou wert unfortunately struck on the head, and beingsenseless, wert brought on board this ship. In the third place, thouart detained on board this vessel by me, and by my authority,\" and helooked down coolly upon me, as I sat upon the floor.
For a moment I hesitated at the ladder, which led down to the littlecraft, but the pirate, as if divining my purpose, had placed his wholeforce at the entrance. Grim and cold they stood, weapons in hand.Bowing to the inevitable, we went down the ladder into the boat, andwere rapidly rowed over to the pirate vessel.
Reaching the pirate, we were immediately carried down the cabin wayinto a large bare room, with a rough bunk in one corner, and only arude table together with a chair or two. The window of this room wasenclosed by an iron grating. Here Steele and myself were left alone.
Slowly, steadily, we drew nearer, nearer, until within a few yards ofher. I could see the soldiers trying to drive the women and childrendown below. Suddenly we came about; I heard the hoarse word ofcommand, and then like a peal of thunder from a clear sky, the piratesdischarged their culverins into the galleon.
The slaughter was fearful. Men, women, and children were mowed down;and the screams of the wounded and dying rang loud and clear in ourears. Men ran hither and thither upon the decks. A few of the soldiersreturned the fire of the pirates, but they seemed paralyzed with terror.
They seemed utterly beside themselves with fright, and abandoning theculverins, from which they had never fired a shot, the gunners randown the hold; while the remainder of the men stood as if dazed by thedestruction which the pirates had wrought.
As the pirates, after securing us, turned to their captives to put thebrutal sentence of their captain into execution, the prisoner who stoodat the end of the line next us, and who wore a long white beard, whichflowed down over his armor, turned to us and cried in English:
As I lay there, a verse of Scripture passed through my mind, learnedlong years ago, at my mother's knee. I had not thought of it fortwenty years, but it came clear and fresh to my mind, as if learned onyesterday. \"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down hislife for his friends.\" Hardly knowing what I did, I repeated these fewwords, more to myself than to him. They were so short, and yet so fullof meaning.
\"Swear upon it,\" I said, \"that by the bones of thy ancestors, by thebody of Jesus, by all the fears of perdition, thou wilt deliver themaiden, with Captain Steele, safe and unharmed, into the hands of herfriends. If thou failest to do so, may a thousand curses weigh down thysoul.\"
\"I am sorry to interrupt this touching scene, but orders thou knowestmust be obeyed,\" and with that two of his men picked me up and carriedme forward. Passing the group of weeping women and children, huddledtogether near the companionway, they carried me in a small boat over tothe other vessel and down below to my old prison. I was alone this timethough; unbinding my hands, they left me.
\"Ah! this goblet,\" the priest resumed, \"well do I remember it; takenby the impious son of Holy Church from the Cathedral at Cartagena. Iimplored, but my anguish availed nothing.\" And the great tears rolleddown the fat[Pg 48] cheeks of the rascal, whose face was fast settling intothe cunning of intoxication.
\"Ah! you boys! You boys!\" he chuckled. \"Wait until thou hast reachedmy years; then thy head will be stronger; thou wilt learn wisdom.\"Solemnly shaking his head, he poured another brimming goblet and slowlydrank it down.
As he went out, I heard the key turn in the lock, and I was left alone.I glanced around the room. It was furnished like the one downstairs;was smaller certainly, and had a bed instead of the luxurious couch.
I crawled under the bushes, and found myself in a low cave. Quietlymoving forward, I looked down. The soft dirt on which I stood cameabruptly to an end, and a sheer fall of fifteen feet was directlybeneath me.
But the other rogue was of sterner mold. With an oath, he whipped outhis cutlass, and was upon me as I was rising from the ground. Well itwas that I had on my light steel breastplate, for the blade, comingviciously down, struck full upon it, and glanced off harmlessly, or Iwould not have been here to tell the tale. In an instant I had drawn mysword and was on guard. 781b155fdc
