A fire snake, also referred to as a black snake or sugar snake, is a classic science experiment you can do right in your own kitchen using a baking soda and sugar mixture and a fuel to ignite the reaction.
When the baking soda gets hot, it makes carbon dioxide gas. The pressure from this gas pushes the carbonate from the burning sugar out, producing the snake reminiscent of popular intumescent fireworks.
This food-based chemistry experiment is not to be confused with the carbon snake, which uses concentrated sulfuric acid instead of baking soda. In either case, don't eat the resulting snake, and only touch it once it has cooled completely.
To make your own fire snake at home like in the video above, you'll need 10 grams of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), 40 grams of sugar, and some type of fuel and a container to house the reaction in.
As mentioned before, when the mixture burns, the baking soda gets hot, and it decomposes to release carbon dioxide gas. A lack of oxygen in the sugar from the combustion creates carbonate and water vapor. The pressure from the CO2 gas pushes this carbonate out to form the snake, which should continue growing for 20 minutes, give or take.
The programmer, who goes by kgsws, said he was able to sneak a snake made of little skulls into Doom by finding a vulnerability in the way Doom 2 and Ultimate Doom load saved games, which allowed him to run custom code inside the game.
Kgsws published this inventive project on GitHub, meaning anyone can download and run it, provided they have a computer with the old operating system DOS or a DOS emulator. What's more, the programmer also published techniques on how to exploit two other bugs that allow hackers and programmers to customize and modify Doom in several different ways.
"I wanted to make the Snake with a twist. I know it was already done. But if you imagine Snake, you might expect [it] to move in four different directions. In my code you have to steer the snake like a car," kgsws said.
In Powerline.io, players are trying to become as large of a snake as they can. Instead of growing your snake by eating apples though, players are gaining length by destroying other snakes and eating the neon bits that they are made of. My project is an amalgamation of not one, but five classic arcade games with modern twists. I have added classic and custom-built graphics to give them that retro feel. Also, dynamic scoring engaging elements to gameplay. This project is also hosted online, which makes it accessible to any gamer, anywhere. The games are as follows:
